From the time European colonists and settlers first set foot on this continent, they brought with them the beliefs, the ideas, that would evolve into the American ideology known today as Manifest Destiny. Still, it was not until 1834 that the newspaper editor, John L. OSullivan, is believed to have first coined the phrase â€Å"Manifest Destiny† when he said in his article Annexation, ...our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions (OSullivan 2). Manifest Destiny produced many conflicts, like the Mexican American War, caused the genocide of multiple nations, and yielded what the United States of America is today. From the time they first settled in the†¦show more content†¦This intriguing idea that sprouted from the beliefs brought by the early Americans became widespread for a number of reasons. Of course, because the settlers had a desire to have liberty and democracy, they belie ved that they should spread it throughout the continent. However, other than this simple and superficial desire, there were other things that led the settlers to shape the United States into what it has become today. According to historian William E. Weeks, there are three main themes that occur while understanding Manifest Destiny. The first of these is the virtue American people possess about themselves and their institutions. This is also called American exceptionalism, and refers to the belief that the people of the United States is categorically superior because of their national doctrine, historical evolution, and political and religious institutions. This term, with respect to the United States, was first used by Alexis de Tocqueville, a French sociologist and political theorist. He is known because of his journey to the United States in 1831, leaving with the intention of studying the prisons of America, but returning with much more knowledge of America than he had intended to collect. He gathered his newfound information into a book called â€Å"Democracy in America† in 1835.
